Fall decor tips

Fall decor tips

Keep it simple. sometimes i think we clutter up our lives and make ourselves stressed by the abundance of things we have standing around. Less is more, as they say.
So take 5 minutes and edit your room that you want to decorate for fall. Remove all the summery things that you have enjoyed. Swap out those pretty pillows for some warmer toned ones. Cafe au lait coloured velvet is the ideal option (very easy to clean also!) Got a friend who can sew? ask her to make little covers for your pillows from the velvet, burlap, or your favorite fall fabric..It’s cost effective and you can swap them out each fall!
Listen to what you love.
yes, i mean it.
Does fall appeal to you most because of the pumpkins? coloured leaves? what makes you do a happy dance?
Zero in on this.
Don’t discount free things found in nature to decorate with. these are my personal favorite!
Use your five senses …let me show you how – to begin with. (These are only ideas to get your own creative juices flowing!!)
Smell – fragrance oils can be added to any unscented candle once the wax starts to melt. If you want to change scent, just scrape a thin layer of wax away and voila. new scent!! Simmering cinnamon on the stove is always thrifty and yummy smelling also!
Sound – check out Youtube’s Johnnie Lawson – he has recorded sounds of nature – flowing water, bird song etc. Some selections will run for 8 hours (handy for sleep if you are a light sleeper, and easily disturbed!) Put these on quietly as relaxing background sound.
Touch- the quickest thing i’ve come across is to find a fall-toned blanket and toss it on your kitchen table as a tablecloth. (Please ensure its washable!) This brings tactile warmth to the look!
Taste- bring back some of those stews and soups now! Dig out your crockpot and look up some healthy, updated recipes. Coming home to something on the stove….is a heart-warming thing. Not to mention delicious! (Lexie’s Kitchen blog has a fantastic beef stew seasoning mix that is DIY and works magic on your stew!)
Sight- Choose one primary spot in your home that you want to decorate. We aren’t living on a magazine shoot budget here, i mean, c’mon. Using found items from nature, we can certainly do more than if we insist on purchased items only. Michael’s 40% off coupon means you can select one (at a time) items to build some decor pieces with.(These coupons are available online all the time.) This year i chose a white pumpkin. Our home is done in soothing neutrals and so it is a perfect fit for us!
And more than anything….have fun! Let your kids help you collect found object. And explain why you are doing this. Beauty is what we see as beauty. It’s not about anything fancy…Beauty was God’s idea…and we are free to enjoy it each and every day.
Happy Autumn
